Here are some common misconceptions and questions we get.
"Is this a RPG?"
No, the Initiative plans to create a real, functioning Starfleet as a division of NASA. This is not a RPG, this is not a group, this is a serious ambition.
"I'm good at [hobby], will that help?" or "I'm a/an [occupation], can I join?"
I get things like this all the time. In order to become a member of Starfleet, you will need to go to the academy. This is just like joining any Navy, you will need to go through basic training to get you prepared for life aboard a ship, even if you never plan on being on one. After this, you will go to specialist training. This is quite like going to university or college. You will study the relevant subjects to your choice profession. Once you have graduated, you will walk out a fully qualified Crewman, or possibly a higher rank, depending on how hard you work.
"I don't know what I'm good at, but I wanna join!"
Again, people say this all the time. It's generally the same answer as above, it's not like we're going to just pluck you off the street and throw you in a ship for five years.
"I want to join, but I'm scared of being killed/I'm scared it's going to be dangerous."
If you're thinking things like this, then you have entirely the wrong idea about Starfleet. Starfleet is a peacekeeping, exploration and scientific discovery orientated body. Meaning it won't be dangerous, you will be out there to explore and discover whats out there.
"I'm not old enough to join yet "
That's okay! By the time Starfleet gets up and running, and faster-than-light travel becomes doable, you will well and truly be old enough. Also, think of it like joining the Navy; if you're not old enough yet, you're probably still in school, and should concentrate on that. School is always more important, as you will need grade 10-11 level education to be eligible for most jobs/courses.
"How old do you have to be?"
18 is the official sign-up age for these sorts of things. However, it would be possible for you to join at 17 years and 6 months, as the minimum training time would be longer than 6 months, ensuring that by the time you have been assigned, you are over the age of 18.
"Can I be captain?"
You don't get to pick and chose rank. You start at the bottom, and work up. If you want to be captain, take a job in command, as most of those will lead up to becoming captain. Captains aren't usually Spring chickens for a reason, you have to make your way through the ranks.
"What if I change my mind on what job I want?"
If you get to a certain point in the job you have and you don't find it interesting any more, you can always change. But this will entail going back to the academy to study the relevant courses to your new choice in profession.
If you find that your question has not been answered here, shoot myself or the other admins a message and we'll get back to you.
